Who’s reading what: biologist Marc Bekoff

鈥淚鈥檓 an eclectic reader,鈥 says Bekoff. Books around his house? William Long鈥檚 How Animals Talk is a 鈥渨onderful鈥, beautifully written book about animal behaviour, published in 1921. 鈥淩upert Sheldrake and I are hoping to have it reissued. It is that good.鈥

Tim Friend鈥檚 Animal Talk (Free Press) is a nice review of vocal communication in animals, he says, and Richard Adams鈥檚 鈥渨onderful story of rabbits鈥, Watership Down (Penguin), is a 鈥渕ust read鈥 for anyone interested in animals and nature. Bekoff鈥檚 Encyclopedia of Animal Behavior is published this month (Greenwood). And on the human front? 鈥淎nything by Antonio Damasio is excellent: he really makes you think out of the box.鈥 Bekoff is reading Damasio鈥檚 latest, Looking for Spinoza (Harcourt, 2003).

Another 鈥渇antastic book鈥 is Mind Wide Open by Steven Johnson (Scribner). Relaxing? Henry David Thoreau鈥檚 Walden: 鈥淣eed I say more?鈥 And any of William Patterson鈥檚 mysteries: 鈥淚鈥檓 a mystery and spy novel fanatic,鈥 he says.
