Puzzle #107: What happens if you cycle the letters in the word Tables?

#107 Turning tables

The word STABLE has the neat property that you can cycle the first letter to the end to make a new word: TABLES. And you can do it again to make ABLEST.

These words have a numerical connection too. If you use the letters in TABLES to represent six particular digits, then:

TABLES 脳 3 = ABLEST and

TABLES 脳 5 = STABLE

What is TABLES 脳 7 (written as a number)?

#106 Having a dart

Solution

Set A was aiming at 20, Set B was random and Set C was 19. It is impossible to score 49 or 59 with three darts when aiming at 20, or to score 14 or 38 when aiming at 19. This means Set B must be the random set, leaving A as 20 and C as 19.

Aiming at 19 and 20 produced similar scores, and did better than random throwing, which suggests that aiming at 19 is at least as good as aiming at 20 for this player. Detailed modelling suggests that top players should aim at 20, but slightly less accurate players at 19. Modest players should aim at 16, and very weak players at the bullseye.
