The Australian government will again try to ban lesbians and single women from having IVF treatment. Last year, the Federal Court ruled that a Victoria state law banning IVF for single women was unlawful under sex discrimination legislation. A challenge by Catholic bishops’ to the ruling was thrown out by Australia’s High Court last week. But to the dismay of opposition parties and doctors, the government has announced that it still intends to press for a countrywide ban. Opposition parties are likely to thwart their attempts.
