A new type of polymer film is being used to make flexible computer displays
that might one day be rolled up like a scroll. The film, developed by Papyron, a
Dutch spin-off from the University of Gr枚ningen, contains regular arrays of
holes 0.02 millimetres in diameter. Filling the holes with light-emitting
polymers produces a light-emitting screen. Alternatively, the holes can be
filled with particles that change colour in response to electric charge to make
a reflective screen. Both types of screen have a much wider viewing angle than
other proposed roll-up displays, says Georges Hadziioannou of Papyron.
