Faced with a catastrophic drop in exports to Europe, American maize farmers
are shying away from genetically modified crops. Gary Goldberg of the American
Corn Growers Association told a conference in London last week that maize
exports to Europe in 1998/99 plunged to just 137 000 tonnes鈥攄own from 2
million the year before. Goldberg blames the biotech industry for “deceiving”
farmers into thinking GM products would be welcome in Europe.
