Russia has cancelled its first commercial hunt of beluga whales in 35 years
after only ten days, bowing to pressure from anti-whaling campaigners and the US
State Department. The Russian government announced in early September that
whalers in the Okhotsk Sea would be harvesting up to 200 tonnes of beluga whale
meat for sale to Japan. According to the International Fund for Animal Welfare,
13 tonnes of meat from about 36 whales arrived in Japan before the hunt was
stopped.
