The number of experiments on genetically engineered animals is soaring in
Britain. According to figures released last week, the number of procedures using
transgenic animals rose by 27 per cent in 1998, reaching 447 000, or 17 per cent
of all animal experiments. The 1998 surge in transgenics was so large that it
caused an increase of 1 per cent in the total number of animals used鈥攖he
first time there has been an overall increase since 1976.
