The latest arcade game craze in Japan is a boogie-by-numbers machine called
“Dance, Dance, Dance”. Made by Konami, the system has a monitor showing an
animated figure dancing to loud music. You simply stand on a mat in front of the
machine, and try to copy the antics on the screen as best you can. Footprints on
the mat light up in time with the music to guide your feet. Unspontaneous it may
be, but it is a huge hit with Japanese teenagers. Queues often form behind
machines placed side by side, where couples who prefer to dance with machines
instead of each other can at least hop to the same beat.
