The new Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness book for children Future is full of
pictures of the future. Although its images look striking enough now, it’s a
safe bet that they will look decidedly quaint when its readers have grown up.
Author Michael Tambini is confident of his predictive ability, but he’s bound to
get his comeuppance sooner or later, when a museum knowingly displays his book
in one of those occasional exhibitions that mocks the futurology of the past.
Tambini should keep his fingers crossed that none of his readers turns out to be
a curator. But Tambini’s vision of the future will probably hold good for a few
years. This is because technology is relatively easy to predict in the short
term as most products take at least a decade to make their way from the research
labs to the shops. Science is different, as you never know what is round the
