A Cook’s tour through the world of rocks, fossils and volcanoes, Teach
Yourself Geology by David Rothery, lecturer at the Open University, is an
excellent general introduction to the subject. Let down only by its paucity of
good quality illustrations, his treatment of a potentially dry subject is given
an extra spark by sections on the geology of other planets, guidance for
fieldworkers and advice for those caught in an earthquake. Published by Hodder
& Stoughton, £6.99, ISBN 0340679921.
