WHEN Australian marine life is discussed, the species along the Barrier Reef,
north of the Tropic of Capricorn, dominate. The richness and diversity of the
plants and animals in the temperate waters of New South Wales, Victoria, South
Australia, Tasmania and southern Western Australia are all too often forgotten.
Graham Edgar, a marine scientist in Tasmania, redresses the balance in
Australian Marine Life鈥攖he plants and animals of temperate waters
($69.95, Reed Books). The marine life is well described with plenty of
photographs and illustrations. But some maps of their range would not have gone
stray.
