THE British government has promised to clamp down on local authorities
which attempt to destroy CFCs in incinerators which are not designed to
handle chemical waste, following an investigation into alternatives to CFCs
and ways of dealing with the CFCs that exist (CFCs and Halons : alternatives
and the scope for recovery for recycling and destruction, HMSO, Pounds sterling
21). A number of councils are considering using incinerators built to deal
with domestic refuse to destroy CFCs, which need to be burnt at higher temperatures.
The Department of the Environment is soon to issue fresh advice on disposing
of CFCs.
