Captured here enjoying the sun is聽an incredibly rare pink female robust grasshopper (Sigaus robustus). These insects are usually grey or brown, which acts聽as camouflage among the stones of their native habitat on聽the edge of New Zealand鈥檚 Mackenzie basin. But some of聽them are pink, which is thought to be the result of a聽genetic mutation that causes overproduction of red聽pigment.
