The long summer nights hold the promise of sitting outside, enjoying the twilight with a book in one hand and a glass of something refreshing in the other – or heading on holiday knowing you’ve got a great read in your luggage.
Enter our competition and you could win eight fabulous nature and natural history books to keep you enthralled until Christmas.

One lucky winner will be spoiled for choice as to which of these fascinating subjects to explore first: beautiful fireflies or the misunderstood timber rattlesnake; the surprising intelligence of birds or the perfection of their eggs; or classic British hedgerows, with a side order of dry stone walls (just how do they stay up?).
Alternatively, be thrilled by accounts of first encounters with the exotic (how would you describe a lychee? Or a chameleon?). Or read the fascinating stories of an American novelist and naturalist who was an ornithological contemporary of Darwin, but is more revered in Argentina than his adopted homeland of England, and the ecologist who studied sea otters to learn about the impact of top-level predators.
There can only be one winner, who will receive a copy of all eight books:
- The Genius of Birds by Jennifer Ackerman
- The Most Perfect Thing: Inside (and outside) a bird’s egg by Tim Birkhead
- Penguins, Pineapples and Pangolins: First encounters with the exotic by Claire Cock-Starkey
- by James A. Estes
- by Ted Levin
- by Sara Lewis
- A Natural History of the Hedgerow: and ditches, dykes and dry stone walls by John Wright
- by Jason Wilson
For your chance to win, just answer the following question: what order of insects do fireflies belong to?
