MPs suggest smart drugs and nutmeg for exemption from drugs law

The UK government is attempting to outlaw legal highs, but MPs are proposing an ever-lengthening list of psychoactive chemicals that could be exempted

NOT a smart move? Nutmeg, church incense and some so-called smart drugs have been proposed as exceptions to a new drug law that will be debated by UK Members of Parliament next week.

The Psychoactive Substances Bill is intended to ban legal highs – new chemicals, designed to mimic illegal drugs, that haven’t been legislated against. If enacted, it would prohibit the production and sale of all substances deemed to be psychoactive, apart from those on a “white list” that currently includes alcohol, nicotine and caffeine.

MPs have been proposing a lengthening list of exceptions, including homeopathic remedies. The latest, by , is for several – claimed to be beneficial for cognitive ability. There is scant evidence that these drugs work, but Gillan says she wants to hear their merits discussed.

However, it’s possible that not all of these amendments will make it into the final bill.
