Stick it to them

Ice hockey is tricky to master. So Michael Hardegger at the ETH in Zurich, Switzerland, wants to make life easier for amateurs with wearable tech. He fitted hockey skates with sensors that monitor where a player鈥檚 feet are and how fast they鈥檙e moving. The stick also has sensors to track pressure, strain and motion. A smartphone app crunches all the data, letting players study their technique and compare it to a pro鈥檚.

Smellfies, anyone?

Smell maps of urban areas can be created via photo captions on visual social networks like Flickr and Instagram. Daniele Quercia at the University of Cambridge, says his system can automatically generate online maps that can let us plot routes taking in smells we like in preference to those that make us wrinkle up our noses in disgust.
