Child "cured" of HIV tests positive, rise in animal testing in the UK, most distant planets in the Milky Way found and more

HIV 鈥渃ure鈥 fails

A child 鈥渃ured鈥 of HIV last year has tested positive for the virus. Born to a mother with HIV, the child from Mississippi was treated with antiretroviral drugs and declared 鈥渇unctionally cured鈥. Now, however, the virus has returned. The child, nearly 4, was found to have high levels of HIV in her blood, suggesting that the virus had escaped from immune control.

Surfing Venus

The European Space Agency鈥檚 Venus Express has survived its month-long dive into the planet鈥檚 thick atmosphere and is now on the climb. It reached 130 kilometres above the surface through aerobraking, which uses friction from the atmosphere to reduce its orbit. Now it is firing its thrusters to get into a higher orbit.

Animal test rise

The number of tests on animals in the UK increased slightly last year, in spite of government plans to reduce them. According to the annual report, . Of these, 2.1 million involved genetically modified animals. Ninety-three per cent of the work was on mice, rats and fish.

Distant planets found

Google lens

Google is to work with Swiss drug company Novartis to develop a smart contact lens that will improve vision and monitor health. A prototype has a tiny sensor, which monitors glucose levels in the tears of people with diabetes, and a wireless transmitter.
