Squishy when wet

On the edge of the bath I keep a plastic artificial sponge. It is relatively rigid when dry, but when I soak it in water it becomes soft and squashable. How does the moisture affect rigidity? I have noticed that some cloths exhibit the same behaviour in reverse, going from soft to stiff when hung out to dry in the sun.
