Backing up

I have a 25-litre rucksack that I use when on holiday. However, wearing it causes my T-shirt to ride up my back, which is rather annoying. Why does this happen and how can I prevent it?

• The impact of each step forces the rucksack down your back, and between steps it rebounds. Going down, it skids harmlessly over your T-shirt because your shoulders and the grip of your clothing under the straps restrain the downward movement of your T-shirt.

However, on its way up, if there is nothing holding the lower end of the T-shirt in place, the rucksack drags the hem up. This amounts to a one-way ratchet, and certainly requires preventative measures, especially in poor weather.

I tuck my shirt into my trousers. If that doesn’t work for you, then either you should make sure your shirt is held firmly in place by a suitably heavy-duty belt, or attach the T-shirt hem to your belt or trousers. The actual details hardly matter as long as the shirt is either held in place, or does not make undesirable contact with the rucksack.

Next time, buy a rucksack with a built-in hip belt. That will prevent the bag from moving up and down in the first place, and also save you energy.
