It鈥檚 likely that you chronicled much of your university life on Twitter and Facebook. But now it鈥檚 time to flex your social media muscles to get a job.

Of course, before you start, it鈥檚 a good idea to check all of your social networks for incriminating evidence of drunken debauchery or crass or unprofessional tweets. You should Google yourself, too, because that鈥檚 what most employers will do, says Kasprzak.

After that鈥檚 done, join LinkedIn. 鈥淭he headhunters that I鈥檝e spoken to don鈥檛 even look at CVs,鈥 says Kasprzak. 鈥淎 lot of recruiters only use LinkedIn.鈥 It can also be a good resource for networking. 鈥淟inkedIn has special services targeted at students to help them find and connect with folks who are actually doing the hiring,鈥 says Kasprzak.

Once you have set up your profile, it is important to project a professional image. 鈥淟inkedIn is not like hanging out at the pub; that鈥檚 Facebook,鈥 says Kasprzak. 鈥淟inkedIn is more like being at the trade show, being at the conference where you have to put the business suit on.鈥 So don鈥檛 use that Instagrammed selfie for your profile picture, and make sure you look smart.

When it comes to the text of your LinkedIn profile, include the keywords that relate to your scientific area of expertise. 鈥淭hose keywords are what recruiters are searching with to find graduates,鈥 says Kasprzak. 鈥淚f you want a job in the laboratory doing DNA analysis, make sure that鈥檚 in your profile.鈥

You can also use Twitter and Facebook to keep abreast of what鈥檚 happening with firms you might want to work for. 鈥淔ollow the tweets of the companies that you鈥檙e interested in,鈥 says Safani. 鈥淏y retweeting their stuff, you become noticed.鈥 A blog or Twitter account about a particular scientific topic can also help you position yourself as an expert.

鈥淥MG I HATE MY JOB!! My boss is a total pervvy wanker.鈥 Believe it or not, these were the words of a Facebook post made by a woman who was 鈥渇riends鈥 with her boss. . Ouch.

Offensive posts don鈥檛 have to be work-related to land you in trouble, either. This year, a British Airways employee was reprimanded for Facebook posts made during Wimbledon. . How rude.

There are countless other cautionary tales of employees crashing and burning via social media. Keep it clean, people.
