Conniff offers an obligatory nod to the mythology and misconceptions surrounding each species he meets, portraying piranhas as demonised guppies and lions as loathsome thugs. He skillfully combines the academic relevance of his observations with the cultural influences surrounding the studies. When he encounters controversial issues, from conservation methodology to frivolous taxonomy, he tactfully embraces both sides of the social and scientific discourse. Though more tongue-in-cheek than wrought with true peril, this is sure to inspire wanderlust.
