Video: Darwin鈥檚 Canopy: Art inspired by evolution
Update: Tania Kovats鈥� TREE has been chosen. It will consist of a cross-section of a 200-year-old oak tree, cut lengthways and running along the full length of the ceiling. It was inspired by Darwin鈥檚 鈥渢ree of life鈥� diagram. A sketch of it can be seen in the slideshow as image 8.
London鈥檚 Natural History Museum is to decorate the ceiling of one of its major rooms with a permanent art installation, inspired by evolutionary theory, in honour of Charles Darwin鈥檚 bicentennial. The 10 shortlisted entrants have now been announced and their ideas are on display.

The artists include Turner Prize winners Rachel Whiteread and Mark Wallinger. Proposals include a large-scale sculpture of Darwin鈥檚 鈥�tree of life鈥� diagram, painted eyes from different animals, and panels indented with footprints.
The design agency has used a computer simulation of evolution to design a sculpture of a miniature ecosystem. .
The chosen piece will be installed on the ceiling of the Central Hall, the previous decorations of which were lost in the 1970s.
The final artwork will go on display on 12 February 2009, the 200th anniversary of Darwin鈥榮 birth.
