As the smoke finally cleared over Manhattan, the devastation wreaked by terrorists in Tuesday’s attack on the World Trade Center twin towers has been revealed from space.
The latest one-metre resolution image from Space Imaging’s IKONOS satellite shows the collapsed remains of the 110-storey buildings. The image was taken at 1154 EDT on 15 September from an altitude of 677 kilometres.

Red fire trucks and other emergency vehicles are visible near the wreckage, as rescuers continue their search for survivors. But as no-one has been found alive since Wednesday, their task is now largely confined to retrieving the remains of the dead.
