This 85-day-old fetus of a thoroughbred horse did not survive because its mother succumbed to colic and died a quarter of the way through her pregnancy. London-based photographer came across the fetus, preserved in a jar of formalin, on a table in a veterinary surgery and took it back to his studio to shoot. This close-up photograph (see photo, right) of the fetus鈥檚 features, from the whisker holes and upturned lips to the delicate hooves and wrinkles on its stomach, provides an arrestingly intimate view.

Flach鈥檚 aim is to explore the complex and close relationship that humans have with the species. This image is one of 200 that can be found in his book, , published by Abrams on 1 October 2008. The images range from an underwater shot of an Arabian horse working out in a pool in Dubai to a Dutch Warmblood sporting police riot gear. To see more photographs, watch the video above, or go along to the in London, where a selection will be on display from 13 to 18 October.
