THE Pacific coast of North America has hosted a rich diversity of wildlife past and present, and in Neptune鈥檚 Ark David Rains Wallace tells its story. Enhanced by Ken Kirkland鈥檚 illustrations, Wallace describes both the evolution of the tetrapods, limbed animals ranging from orcas to seabirds, and curious extinct creatures such as Tiktaalik, a lobe-finned fish from 375 million years ago that could do press-ups. Wallace engages well with the tragic tale of human mistreatment of marine mammals, such as the now extinct Steller鈥檚 sea cow.
