All in My Head: An epic quest to cure an unrelenting, totally unreasonable, and only slightly enlightening headache by Paula Kamen

Elizabeth Sourbut and the headache from hell

YOUR head aches. You take a pill. Bet you didn鈥檛 know that if you take too many headache tablets they can cause 鈥渞ebound鈥 headache. The cure has become the cause of the malady. So what do you do if you get a headache that doesn鈥檛 go away, ever?

Paula Kamen has had a headache for 15 years. All in My Head is her story of learning to live with constant, debilitating pain. Doctors and alternative healers repeatedly promised to cure her, but no one could do more than relieve the pain for a while. Often the severe side effects of drugs were worse than the headache. When she did not recover, many practitioners dismissed her as neurotic, or prescribed psychotherapy.

Her book combines the tale of her personal search for help with a powerful call for action. Chronic daily headache (CDH) is far more common in women than in men, and Kamen found that she is not alone in being taken less than seriously by male doctors. Eventually she found evidence that CDH is real and incurable: she is one of a surprisingly large group of people who are genetically predisposed to be hypersensitive to pain. They need understanding and support from family and friends, access to disability payments and help to manage the pain.

This book, written with passion and a remarkable sense of humour in the face of the relentless headache, will reassure fellow sufferers that they are not alone and help friends and relatives to understand a little of what people with CDH are going through, every day of their lives.
