Alfred’s own words

Have a guess at who wrote this: 鈥淕ive the people good conditions, improve their environment, and all will tend towards the highest type. Eugenics is simply the meddlesome interference of an arrogant, scientific priestcraft.鈥

Alfred Russel Wallace, is who. Usually billed as the man whom Darwin pipped at the post on natural selection, his life鈥檚 work ranged from biogeography to social reform.

He鈥檚 been much biographised recently, so editor Andrew Berry鈥檚 anthology of Wallace鈥檚 writings Infinite Tropics (Verso, 拢14) is a great way to savour his own words on hair, hazardous voyages, evolution and 鈥渞obbery of the poor by the rich鈥. I was disturbed, though, to discover quite how much such an intelligence was preoccupied by spiritualism.
