Carbon conundrum

What is to be done about carbon emissions? The problem is often presented as intractable – not least by those corporations that want to ring the last cent of return from their investments before anything is done. The Solar Economy (Earthscan, £13.99) presents a solution. It comes emblazoned with a quote from èƵ’s review of the hardback edition: “Inspirational… Sheer’s is a heady, utopian vision. Here comes the sun.”

Hermann Scheer, a Social Democrat in Germany’s Federal Parliament who before that was a member of the team at the (then) Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Centre, would argue with that “utopian”. He aims to set out a practical social and economic case for radical energy decentralisation. This would be helped, of course, by changes in geopolitics – for instance, ending the massive subsidies given to “free trade” by tax-free aviation and shipping fuel.
