THE problem with travel is people. One of the crew on James Cook鈥檚 second voyage south complains: 鈥淚 am the object of their Envy & they hinder me in the pursuit of Natural History.鈥� Peter Aughton鈥檚 Resolution is an enticing story of southern exploration, pierced by cannibalism and mean-spirited quarrels. But it鈥檚 impossible not to be saddened by the imperial context of the voyage, in spite of its stellar science.
