Stephen Pyne鈥檚 Smokechasing concentrates on US wildfire problems, but his ideas have global relevance.

A professor at Arizona State University, he describes himself as a 鈥減yromantic鈥�, and says that we should learn from our ancient relationship with fire. The choices between total suppression and risky preventative burning to control the wilderness are, he reckons, too narrow. He wants policy, poetry and fire studies. Fascinating stuff.
