Making the most of memories

Modern digital cameras record sound and video on memory cards, but capacity is still expensive at up to a dollar per megabyte. Hewlett-Packard has worked out a neat way to save on memory space and at the same time index the most interesting parts of your recordings (WO 03/12693).

Suppose you are at a school concert and your child is on the bill. Using HP鈥檚 camera, you shoot everything with low-quality mono sound, and then flick to hi-fi stereo when your child takes the stage. The camera also automatically adds a 鈥渟pecial interest鈥 icon to that sequence so that it is easy to find later.
