While it鈥檚 much cheaper and easier to shoot movies on video, they look very different from film. That鈥檚 because the mechanical shutter in a film camera exposes each frame of film for much longer than a video camera, so any motion captured by film is relatively blurred. British company Snell and Wilcox of Hampshire has worked out how to give video a 鈥渇ilm look鈥� (GB 2 373 946).
The new type of video camera would have two separate image sensors. One shoots the action at 24 frames a second, while the other simultaneously shoots the same action at 10 times that speed. The film editor later uses a computer to blend in sequences of frames from the rapid sequence to the main footage, creating an artificial blur that mimics the look of film.
