Painting adverts on the pitch to make money from televised sporting events
can be distracting for players. Patterns of raked grass wouldn’t trouble people
on the pitch, yet they’d come over almost as clearly on TV, says British company
Turf Image (GB 2361572). The firm suggests raking, mowing and repeatedly rolling
an area of the pitch to make the grass lie as flat as possible in a direction
pointing away from the main TV camera. The flattened area would then be covered
with a plastic sheet with holes in the shape of the logo. Raking, brushing and
repeatedly rolling the exposed grass in a different direction produces a logo
that shows up on a camera mounted high in the stand, but is practically
invisible to the players.
