In the mood

A POPULAR antidepressant can restore sexual desire in women who have lost
interest in sex, even when depression isn鈥檛 the cause of their diminished
libido.

Previous studies have shown that the drug bupropion could counteract the
decreased sexual desire often caused by other antidepressants such as Prozac.
But a new trial shows the drug can work on its own to increase sex drive in some
women.

Kathleen Segraves at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and
her colleagues tested bupropion on 51 women who were suffering an unexplained
loss of sexual desire. After being treated with the drug for eight weeks, 29 per
cent of the women reported improved sexual desire.

Bupropion is marketed as an antidepressant under the name Wellbutrin, and as
a drug to help people stop smoking under the name Zyban. 鈥淚t鈥檚 an interesting
drug,鈥 Segraves says. 鈥淪ince this drug seems to be pounding the parts of the
brain that control motivation, eating, sleeping, smoking, we thought, 鈥榃hy not
see what happens?'鈥

Unlike Prozac, which affects the serotonin system of the brain, bupropion
inhibits the uptake of noradrenalin and dopamine, two other brain chemicals
thought to influence mood. But Segraves says its mechanism isn鈥檛 well
understood.

She also warns that her preliminary study needs to be confirmed by a more
rigorous follow-up trial that is going on now. For instance, this study used
only a small sample size, and was only a single-blind trial, meaning the
researchers knew who was getting the placebo and who was getting the actual
drug.
