Oil rig operators use oily mud to lubricate their drills, but this means the
cuttings from the well can cause pollution—especially at sea. Elf
Exploration of France is patenting an additive for the muddy mixture which
breaks down the lubricant safely after use (GB 2348897). An emulsion of oil in
water is mixed with urea, lauryl phosphate and oleic acid. Tests run by Elf show
that these chemicals greatly accelerate the biodegradation of the oil, even in
seawater.
