The Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel is claiming a breakthrough
in the diagnosis of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder—also known as manic
depression (WO 00/41625). BGUN researchers have found that the intervals between
words as someone speaks reveal a lot about their state of mind. After recording
a subject’s speech, they digitise it and use fractal and Fourier analysis to
plot the pattern of the gaps between words. By comparing the plots of people who
have these conditions with those who don’t, they claim to have identified
patterns linked with these disorders.
