Pale penguin picks up a partner

THIS albino penguin has overcome the social stigma of being white and
found a mate. In the past, the few albinos spotted have failed to keep mates and
have been ostracised by other penguins in their colonies. 鈥淎lbino penguins
almost never pair, and are often pecked at,鈥 says Jun Nishikawa of the Ocean
Research Institute in Tokyo.

But on a trip to Antarctica, Nishikawa saw a white Ad茅lie penguin
(Pygoscelis adeliae) on the edge of a colony at Amundsen Bay. The white
bird was incubating an egg. The only other albino-like Ad茅lie penguin
known to have produced an egg was seen in 1969, but died after laying.

Nishikawa鈥檚 penguin is predominately white with a few dark feathers on its
back and a red bill. Although it鈥檚 not a complete albino, it is the closest ever
recorded in an Ad茅lie. It鈥檚 not clear what happened to the brave white
penguin, because a geological party failed to spot it a month after Nishikawa鈥檚
visit. But at that time, most adults were away feeding and the albino probably
did the same, leaving its chick in a cr猫che.
