Improbable, irreproducible and invaluable

IT鈥橲 a madhouse. In one corner a group contemplates the Tomb of the Unknown
Dentist, while some distance away a dedicated band are investigating the
aerodynamics of crisps. Someone else is explaining the politically correct
periodic table.

Fans of the Annals of Improbable Research, an American鈥攁nd
invaluable鈥攑ublication, will know the territory at once.

AIR, as it is familiarly called, started as the Journal of
Irreproducible Research with the aim of showing that scientists could have
a sense of humour and therefore a sense of proportion.

The journal鈥檚 founders continued on their jokey, satirical and
pomposity-pricking ways, to the delight of most of the scientific community and
hordes of others, along the way founding the annual award of Ig Nobel prizes,
whose ceremonies have been attended by genuine Nobel prizewinners.

So The Best of Annals of Improbable Research (Macmillan,
拢12.95, ISBN 0716730944) is a good idea. It also includes reprints from
scientific publications that are bizarrely deadpan, such as 鈥淭he perception of
speech sounds recorded within the uterus of a pregnant sheep鈥, a paper that
appeared in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America.
