Technofile : Full circle

A new way of ridding the world of old tyres has been developed in Germany.
The solution is a reverse vulcanisation process that effectively creates new
rubber from old tyres.

G眉nter Mennig and Hannes Michael of the University of Chemnitz, Germany,
have a patented the process for transforming tyres into a reusable raw material.
They take ground-up tyres, add a polymeriser and heat them, creating, they say,
鈥渁 raw material which can be repeatedly melted and used鈥. The new material is
elastic and will stretch to double its original size before breaking.
