Theodore Kaczynski went on trial for his life last week in Sacramento,
California, where he stands accused of being the Unabomber. The local paper, The
Sacramento Bee, has set up a Web site devoted to the proceedings at
http://www.unabombertrial.com/.
Labelled a mad genius and an antihero by some, Kaczynski鈥檚 technophobic
extremism has excited a curious fascination among people who view machines with
suspicion. See the comments from visitors to the Unabomber Fan Club page
(http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/4825/ unafan.html).
Strangely enough, most of these people don鈥檛 seem to find anything
ironic in using the Web to discuss the Unabomber鈥檚 views.
The Unabomber鈥檚 Manifesto, published in The Washington Post, presented an
apocalyptic view of a society in which the machine has taken over. You鈥檒l find a
transcript on The Sacramento Bee site. The publication eventually led to
Kaczynski鈥檚 arrest.
