Racing bikes are getting too complicated for their riders. They have so many
gears that some cyclists are at a loss when to shift to a higher or lower gear.
Browning Automatic Transmissions of Washington DC is patenting a bike that
stores its owner鈥檚 preferred gear-shift patterns at different pedalling speeds
in an onboard computer (EP 786 400). The computer counts the number of hub
revolutions and automates whatever shift up or down is needed to maintain a
constant pedalling rhythm.
