BRITAIN鈥橲 current programme for building trunk roads and motorways will
destroy or disturb more than 800 known archaeological sites, warned English
Heritage, a conservation agency, this week. The agency estimates that the
cost of recording all the data from the sites before they are destroyed
could exceed Pounds sterling 73 million.
English Heritage called on the British government, which is responsible
for the motorway and trunk-road programme, to foot the bill.
